Manual and Patient Handling in Dementia Care

Skills for Care found that 93% of staff working in social care experienced verbal abuse and 56% experienced physical abuse. This course offers them a range of practical tips that they can try in order to improve life for both themselves and the people the care for.

Description

In manual and Patient Handling we have become used to using the Task, Individual, Load, Environment and Equipment approach (TILEE) model based on legislation to assess manual handling risks, and this model still works for people with dementia.  It is just that we should consider the benefit of investing more time on understanding what is termed as 'psychosocial factors'.

What is the Main Aim of the Course?

To provide Support Workers with sufficient background knowledge on the topic of dementia and offer them a range of practical tips that they can try in order to improve life for both themselves and the people the care for.

What will I Learn?

By the end of the course the attendees will be able to:

  • List the main types of Dementia-related illness.
  • Summarise the legal framework for supporting individuals with Dementia
  • Explain challenging behaviour
  • Explain the challenges of communication
  • State how the environment can impact on behaviour that challenges
  • Demonstrate a range of Manual handling techniques when supporting an individual who lives with Dementia
